Resource Consents

Check your local District Plan - if an activity that you wish to undertake is not 'permitted' (i.e. subdivision of land), then you need an approved resource consent which allows you to undertake the activity. Failure to obtain a resource consent before undertaking an activity that requires one can result in significant fines as well as footing the bill for remedial works. This is often the case when you've built a new home and find out the need for a resource consent at the building consent stage.

What is a Resource Consent?

Resource consents are legal documents which give you legal permission to undertake an activity not permitted under your local District Plan.

Resource consents are governed by the Resource Management Act (RMA). The RMA requires that Councils must ensure that the effects of activities on the environment are managed sustainably. Councils give effect to this mandate by preparing District Plans (or City Plans) which outline what people can and can't do on the land. Activities that aren't 'permitted' require resource consent.
